Winter is perhaps the best time of year for a company party. It’s cold outside, but inside the candles are lit, Christmas music is playing, and the first platters of bitterballen appear as if they’d never gone away. Work can wait for a while, laptops stay closed, and for one evening, colleagues transform from serious professionals into passionate trivia champions, karaoke heroes, or enthusiastic après-skiers. Whether you opt for a cozy Christmas dinner, a Winter Wonderland party, a festive Christmas market, a dinner game, a winter city scavenger hunt, or a full-scale après-ski spectacle—a winter party is all about enjoying each other’s company. Forget about targets and KPIs for a while—instead, enjoy mulled wine, hot chocolate, delicious food, and coworkers who suddenly turn out to know surprisingly many lyrics to “Last Christmas.” Even those who, just five minutes earlier, claimed, “I really never sing along.” The beauty of a winter company party is that the possibilities are endless. From cozy venues with fireplaces to atmospheric castles, beach pavilions, historic forts, or fully decorated winter villages. Add to that great food, surprising entertainment, and a healthy dose of humor, and you have all the ingredients for an evening people will be talking about for months to come.

A winter company party doesn’t have to start in a party hall. Why not start by soaking up the Christmas spirit together at one of the most beautiful winter markets in the Netherlands? Amid twinkling lights, wooden Christmas chalets, hot chocolate, mulled wine, and the scent of freshly baked oliebollen, work stress and overflowing inboxes fade into the background surprisingly quickly. Even the colleague who starts counting down to summer as early as October is suddenly excitedly trying on a Santa hat. Take, for example, Magisch Maastricht on the Vrijthof. Here you’ll find a large ice rink, a Ferris wheel, cozy Christmas chalets, and thousands of lights. It’s the perfect spot to take a stroll together before you sit down for a lavish dinner or a spectacular staff party. Chances are someone will exclaim, “There’s no way I’m going skating.” Only to be trying to do pirouettes twenty minutes later… with mixed success.
Christmas Town Valkenburg is also an absolute must-see. Where else can you stroll through centuries-old marl caves that have been completely transformed into underground Christmas markets? Add to that a Christmas parade, charming streets, and winter cheer, and you’ve got a company outing that people will be talking about for a long time to come. And let’s be honest: an underground Christmas market sounds just a little more exciting than a meeting on the third floor. Prefer to take a step back in time? Then the Dickens Festival in Deventer is a fantastic choice. Hundreds of characters from Charles Dickens’ books wander through the historic city center, complete with costumes, street musicians, and old-fashioned charm. Chances are your colleagues will lose track of each other along the way… because they’ll be sneaking off to take a photo with Ebenezer Scrooge.
The Royal Christmas Fair in The Hague is also highly recommended. On Lange Voorhout, you’ll stroll past charming wooden chalets, thousands of Christmas lights, bonfires, and winter treats. It’s the perfect way to spend an evening, especially when combined with a Christmas get-together or dinner in the city center. And of course, there’s always that one coworker who says, “I’m really not buying anything.” That same coworker is walking around half an hour later with three Christmas gifts, a scented candle, and a bag of churros. For an extra romantic atmosphere, Gouda by Candlelight might just be the best choice. As soon as the streetlights go out and thousands of candles illuminate the historic city center, it feels as if time stands still for a moment. A beautiful spot to ring out the year together. Though, of course, there’s always someone who asks, just at that moment, if there will be any bitterballen.
The great thing about including a winter market as part of your company party is that no one has to wonder what to do. Conversations happen naturally, coworkers mingle, laugh together, sample winter treats, and make memories outside the usual office setting. Afterward, you’ll sit down for a cozy dinner, a fun quiz, a Winter Wonderland party, or maybe even a full-blown après-ski party. Because let’s be honest: a Christmas market is really the perfect warm-up for a staff party. You start off quietly with a hot chocolate… and a few hours later, you’ll find yourself singing along with coworkers whom, on Monday, you barely knew beyond their email addresses. That’s what we call real team building.
